Commenting on the announcement, Hiromichi Aoki, Representative Director of Binex, stated:
Preceding full-scale sorghum cultivation in Peru, Binex has contracted land in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture where we’ve been able to grow sorghum adapted to Japan’s climate and soil and which sequesters large quantities of CO2. We are also working on the production of clean energy such as biomass pellets and biomass methanol utilizing sorghum residues (stems and leaves, etc.) leaving the edible grain for human and animal consumption. It is a great pleasure to know that our efforts surrounding “local production for local consumption” of food and energy, global warming countermeasures, and promotion of local communities have been highly evaluated by the Resilience Council such that we could be honored with an Award of Excellence at the 8th Japan Resilience Awards. Encouraged by this award, we would like to further accelerate our efforts towards SDGs and national land resilience.

MOU signed with Geely Holding Group’s Jiangxi Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicle for strategic partnership to develop batteries for new electric commercial vehicles

3DOM-affiliated company to develop the world’s first※1 carbon neutral commercial fleet service using new electric vehicles

3DOM Inc. (“3DOM”) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) in April 2022 with Jiangxi Geely New Energy Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd. (“GCV”) for a strategic partnership to develop battery packs for new electric commercial vehicles (“ECVs”). GCV is an entity within the Geely Holding Group (“Geely”), engaged in the development, manufacturing, and sales of ECVs.

3DOM will jointly develop batteries for the E51, an ECV manufactured by GCV, and will supply approximately 600MWh of batteries (equivalent to 15,000 vehicles) by 2025 through 3DOM (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., 3DOM’s wholly-owned subsidiary responsible for the manufacture and sale of 3DOM batteries.

Geely is a leading manufacturer in China and parent company of Volvo Cars and other notable brands. Geely’s Chairman, Mr. Li Shufu, is a major shareholder of Mercedes Benz and Daimler Group and has strengthened relationships with leading European manufacturers. Geely produces vehicles that demonstrate high performance and quality while maintaining price competitiveness.

The batteries jointly developed by 3DOM will be used in the E51, the latest electric light commercial van model launched by GCV, Geely’s ECV division, in March 2022. The van is fully suited for delivery operations in Japan.

The E51 will be used for the world’s first carbon neutral commercial fleet service (details below), which 3DOM plans to roll out through an affiliated company to be newly established. Outside of the service, the model will also be sold by GCV to transportation companies and logistics providers.

E51

About the carbon neutral commercial fleet service

The 3DOM Group will introduce the world’s first carbon neutral commercial fleet service through an affiliated company to be newly established, targeting a 2023 launch starting in Japan. The first step will be to provide a fleet service which packages the E51 with clean electricity and carbon credits to users such as supermarkets and transport companies.

Due to the impact of global warming, lifecycle emission reduction has become a critical issue. It is also expected that monetary penalties for carbon emissions will soon be introduced. The transportation and logistics industry, one of the sectors emitting the most carbon dioxide, is accelerating its move to decarbonize in response to strong demand from major e-commerce companies and manufacturers.

On the other hand, the introduction of ECVs has been hampered by several barriers, including the higher pricing of electric vehicles over conventional gasoline vehicles due to battery costs, as well as insufficient charging networks.

3DOM responds to these issues with proprietary long-life battery technology, which enables battery second use and reduced battery cost per charge/discharge. 3DOM also aims to alleviate the financial burden of shifting to ECVs by providing vehicles through subscription and/or lease services.

To address the problem of insufficient charging networks, 3DOM is pursuing alliances with companies developing charging infrastructure powered by clean electricity. In addition, carbon credits※2 will be acquired to offset carbon emissions from battery and vehicle manufacturing, allowing the fleet service to achieve carbon neutrality from production through operations.

Through these initiatives, 3DOM will realize a carbon neutral commercial fleet service which addresses the issues currently hindering the introduction of ECVs.

The 3DOM Group is committed to deploying cutting-edge clean energy solutions to truly solve critical environmental issues.

Binex significantly expands biomass syngas and biomethanol production system

Binex Inc. (“Binex”; Head Office: Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Hiromichi Aoki) will complete construction of a large-scale biomass combustion and synthesis gas production plant in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture in April 2022. By June the plant will begin concurrent operation with the existing biomethanol production plant after the former’s test runs and other preparations are concluded. These developments will establish a full-scale shipment system for biomethanol samples. The plant was operated by Chuo Kankyo (Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture) until 2011 before being transferred last year from the company to Binex, who refurbished and re-built it with state-of-the-art technology. Chuo Kankyo will provide assistance with future operations.

Previously, a small biomass combustion and biomethanol production plant located in Isahaya City, Nagasaki Prefecture (“Isahaya Plant”) was transferred to Binex from Biomass Energy Corporation, a company founded in May 2021 and one of Binex’s major shareholders. The biomethanol produced at this plant was provided to Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and was utilized in the 2021 F1 Championship as fuel for the Red Bull-Honda F1 racing cars.

Going forward, a biomass combustion and syngas production plant to be completed in Nagasaki City (“Nagasaki Plant”) will be capable of producing biomass syngas on a scale 10 times that of the Isahaya plant. If the full plant capacity is utilized for biomethanol, it will be possible to produce approximately 350 kiloliters per year. This plant will also make possible the provision of biomass syngas to produce SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel)※1 and ABF (Advanced Biofuels)※2, such as biodiesel and ethanol.

With the completion of the Nagasaki Plant, which is based on the technology and experience accumulated at the Isahaya Plant, Binex will establish a large-scale biomass syngas and biomethanol production system. Binex plans to supply biomethanol to oil companies, petrochemical companies, major automobile manufacturers, industrial gas companies, trading companies, and others, as well as partake in the joint development of SAF and ABF.

Commenting on the announcement, Hiromichi Aoki, Representative Director of Binex, stated the following:
“We are very pleased to announce the completion of the Nagasaki Plant, which combines the biomass combustion and biomass syngas production technologies developed over many years by Biomass Energy, one of our major shareholders, and will allow us to begin shipping biomethanol samples to the many companies that have been waiting to obtain them. While we have achieved production of biomethanol and biodiesel from the biomass syngas produced at the Isahaya Plant, we are also capable of synthesizing SAF and ABF, and are in discussions with many trading companies and energy companies in Japan and abroad. We expect that the operation of the Nagasaki Plant will greatly advance these efforts and, together with the development of sorghum breeding suitable for gasification※3 that we are developing together with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Tokyo, will be another big step toward the realization of carbon negativity.”

Through these activities, Binex is truly committed to reducing the Earth’s carbon footprint.
